Ito uses the traditional process of drypoint to create new printmaking imagery with a focus on the relationship between art and nature. Frequently drawn to the pine as a motif, the artist explains this is because the pine in Japan has been associated with life and culture since ancient times and is a recurring theme in Japanese art. With reference to Japanese gardens and the art of Bonsai she says, “working from nature’s beauty, people created new beauty. By traditional techniques and traditional motifs, I want to make a new image that transcends photography.”
